Hamstring Tendon Tears and Surgical Repair

Hamstring repair is a surgical procedure to repair a torn hamstring tendon. The hamstring is a group of three muscles that run down the back of the thigh. They are responsible for bending the knee and extending the hip.

A hamstring tear can occur suddenly, such as when you land awkwardly from a jump or twist your leg. It can also occur gradually, over time, due to overuse.

Symptoms of a hamstring tear include:

  • Pain in the back of the thigh

  • Swelling in the back of the thigh

  • Inability to bend the knee or extend the hip

  • A popping or snapping sensation in the back of the thigh

  • Difficulty walking or running

If you have any of these symptoms, it is important to see us to get a diagnosis and discuss treatment options.

There are a number of different treatments available for a hamstring tear, depending on the severity of the tear. Some common treatments include:

  • Rest

  • Ice

  • Compression

  • Elevation (RICE)

  • Physical therapy

  • Surgery

Rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE) are often the first line of treatment for a hamstring tear. These treatments can help to reduce pain and inflammation.

Physical therapy can help to strengthen the muscles around the knee and improve range of motion.

Surgery may be necessary if other treatments have not been successful or if the hamstring tear is severe and located in the proximal tendon attachment to bone. There are a number of different surgical procedures that can be used to repair a hamstring tear. The type of surgery that is best for you will depend on the severity of your tear and your individual needs. Occasionally surgery can be performed in a minimally invasive fashion with arthroscopy, which can reduce potential surgical complications.

The goal of treatment for a hamstring tear is to relieve pain, improve range of motion, and return the hamstring to its normal function. With proper treatment, most people with a hamstring tear can return to their normal activities.

Here are some things to expect after hamstring repair surgery:

  • You will likely have a brace on your knee for 4 weeks after surgery.

  • You will need to rest your leg and avoid strenuous activity.

  • You will need to participate in physical therapy to regain range of motion and strength in your leg.

  • It may take several months for your leg to fully heal.

The success rate of hamstring repair surgery is high. Most people who have the surgery experience relief from pain and improved function in their leg. However, there is a small risk of complications, such as infection, bleeding, nerve damage, and stiffness.
