Hip Arthroscopy: A minimally invasive procedure for hip pain

Hip arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that allows surgeons to examine and treat problems inside the hip joint. It is a less invasive alternative to traditional open hip surgery, and it often results in a faster recovery time.

Hip arthroscopy is typically used to treat the following conditions:

  • Labral tears

  • Cartilage damage

  • Loose bodies in the joint

  • Hip impingement

  • Bursitis

  • Avascular necrosis (AVN)

  • Gluteal tendon tears

  • Hamstring tendon tears

During hip arthroscopy, the surgeon makes several small incisions in the hip. A small camera (arthroscope) is inserted into one of the incisions, and it is used to transmit a magnified image of the hip joint to a video monitor. The surgeon then inserts other small surgical instruments through the other incisions to repair the damage to the hip joint.

Hip arthroscopy is usually performed on an outpatient basis, and patients typically go home the same day. Recovery from hip arthroscopy is usually much faster than recovery from traditional open hip surgery. Most patients are able to return to their normal activities within a few weeks.
