Meniscus Root Tears and Repair

The meniscus is a C-shaped piece of cartilage that acts as a cushion between the thighbone (femur) and shinbone (tibia) in the knee joint. It helps to distribute weight evenly across the joint, absorb shock, and provide stability. A meniscus root tear is a tear that occurs at the point where the meniscus attaches to the bone. This type of tear can be caused by a sudden twisting or pivoting motion of the knee, or by a direct blow to the knee. Meniscus root tears can cause pain, swelling, stiffness, and locking or catching of the knee. In some cases, the tear may not cause any symptoms.

If you have a meniscus root tear, your doctor may recommend surgery to repair the tear. Meniscus root repair surgery is usually performed arthroscopically, which means that it is done through small incisions in the knee. During the surgery, the surgeon will use a camera and small instruments to view the inside of the knee. The surgeon will then repair the tear by suturing the meniscus back to the bone.

Meniscus root repair surgery is usually successful in relieving pain and restoring function to the knee. However, there is a risk of complications, such as infection, stiffness, and arthritis.
